For most people fly-fishing is a hobby but for others it is a profession. Unfortunately, trying to obtain your first job as a fly – fishing guide is difficult. The world of fly – fishing guides is extremely competitive
Other instructors on the School for Guides are all experts in those different skills that form the core of the course.
The courses are deliberately restricted in the number of places available so as to guarantee a quality instruction and interaction thus enhancing the possibilities of obtaining that all important first job.
Applicants must pass through a process of selection, which reviews the applicant´s aptitude and attitude for the job aimed at.
As a guide you discover the joy of working in nature and earning top wages – averaging $3000 with tips for a good guide working from a good lodge. This course is an investment for the future. The cost of the course can be paid off by working just three weeks.
The SALVELINUS SCHOOL of GUIDES offers a complete program of instruction that lasts a week and covers techniques of fly-fishing and learning how to instruct, communicate and guide.
This course also covers all the different aspects of guiding such as: recognizing different styles of casting and fishing used by anglers as well as the organization of insurance and budgets.
Also teaches how to find a job as a professional guide. Some of those who have successfully completed the course have worked for SALVELINUS for various seasons.
Although the mastery of different fly – fishing techniques is essential, effective communication and knowing how to instruct are paramount.
The Course begins on Sunday at 17.00 hours and finishes the following Sunday at 13.00 hours.
This is a very instructive course lasting 7 nights and 8 days.
Sunday: Equipment required, review of knots, accessories, rods and reels
Monday to Saturday. This is a rigorous instructional program, which requires a 100% attention from the very start. It begins with specific seminars and casting clinics plus river fly fishing until dinner.
Post dinner sessions pool and review all that has been studied.
Students carry out practical sessions guiding and/or instructing other instructors or fellow students. Oral presentations plus feedback are key course elements.
Sunday. The course finishes with a personalized evaluation pointing out the most frequent mistakes and each student is given a dossier containing those key points for a successful day´s fishing.
