Geographically speaking, Patagonia is an area situated in the very south of South America. From a political point of view, the eastern part of the region belongs to Argentina and the western area is part of Chile.

Both separated by parallel 42º S

However, there is another classification based on habitat type

The Patagonia of the Andes, with the following features:

The Patagonia of the steppes with the following features: 

  • Arid
  • Shrublands
  • Deserts

Chilean Patagonia is an area shaped by glaciers. It consists of:

 A narrow coastal plain

  • Snowdrifts
  • Mountains
  • Fiords
  • Archipelagos
  • Island
  • Glaciers
  • Volcanoes
  • Coastal waterfalls

And finally, the tundra which extends as far as Cape Horn.

Chilean Patagonia also has steppes:

  • In the north of the isle Grande de Tierra del Fuego
  • In the area round Coyhaique, which is quite flat or shows low moraine hills

South of parallel 47º South in the Andes we find:

  • Northern Ice Field
  • Southern Ice Field

A very general classification of the rivers in the Patagonia of Chile shows:

  • Rivers bounded by the Southern Ice Field which feature torrential upper waters due to the Andes and irregularly shaped courses.
  • Rivers in the Region of Magallanes (Magellan) which are short due to the intense glacial action the area suffers.
